You actively recruit and screen host families in your area, ensuring students are placed in safe, welcoming homes.

  • Identify and recruit suitable host families in your local area
  • Conduct home visits and initial screenings
  • Maintain regular contact with host families throughout the year
  • Address any concerns or issues that arise

🎓 Support Exchange Students

You are the primary local contact for students — ensuring their wellbeing, school integration, and cultural experience.

  • Welcome students upon arrival and assist with orientation
  • Conduct monthly in-person check-ins with each student
  • Submit monthly activity and welfare reports
  • Assist with school enrollment and community activities

Frequently Asked Questions

How many students will I be responsible for?
This varies by area and availability. Most LCs start with 1–3 students and can grow their portfolio over time as they become more experienced.
How much time does it require each month?
Typically 4–8 hours per student per month, including in-person check-ins, report submissions, and communication with host families and J1Path staff.
Do I need to speak another language?
No — all J-1 exchange students are required to have English proficiency to participate in the program. English is the primary language of communication.
How do I recruit host families?
Through your existing community networks — churches, schools, neighborhood groups, social media, and word of mouth. J1Path also provides marketing materials to help you recruit.
What background check is required?
All Local Coordinators must pass a criminal background check as required by the U.S. Department of State J-1 program regulations. J1Path will guide you through this process.
